ANTI-SELFIE CHALLENGE

Home / seniors / ANTI-SELFIE CHALLENGE

In March, we addressed a middle school art class studying photography.  We were thrilled for the opportunity to share our knowledge and images with these eager, young students.  But we also had a strong desire to discuss responsible uses of social media. We encouraged those that wanted to participate in a ‘Anti-Selfie Challenge.’  We truly believe that ‘selfies’ can cause significant problems for teens.  Studies show that selfies can cause narcissistic behavior, OCD, and depression.  Depending on the suggestiveness of the selfie, they can lead to potential missed opportunities with scholarships, college entry, and jobs.  Finally, we feel there are much more interesting things to photograph other than yourself.  It is a trend we hope to see end soon.

For the next three months, the participants had to refrain from taking selfies.  Their images were posted to Instagram using the hashtag #nepchallenge.  (If you are an Instagrammer…check them out.)  We were so impressed with the images that were posted given the ages of the participants.  We truly felt as if we got to know each of the students through their images.  It was an amazing experience for all involved and we are so very proud of them.

We would like to thank the art teachers, Jennifer G. and Erin G., for asking us first to do this and secondly for embracing our idea.  There were three overall winners (Weston L. (male), Brook H. (female) and Emma B. (teacher’s choice).  The winners of each category are listed below.  Last names have been withheld given their ages.

The Overall Challenge Winners can look forward to the following:  the opportunity to shadow us on a photo shoot this summer, a fun and adventurous photo shoot with their five best friends, an iTunes gift card, and their images put on display at their school.
